Sotun Krouch came to Roca, Inc. as a student; now he’s a member of the leadership team.
So I first came to Roca when I was about 12 years old…. My mother raised the three of us by herself. So she was constantly working. So I didn't really have an adult figure … checking in on me or … showing me the way….
But what really kind of got me hooked onto Roca was the sense of family—the values that they had shown me…. I feel very fortunate to have found Roca, because I never knew my father, I didn't even know his name until probably a year ago….
I love to learn. I'll read textbooks, things like that. I'll go through it. But I just couldn't stay in school. I just didn't like attending school. Because I want to learn what I want to learn, right? But I dropped out of high school when I was about 16 and a half.
I joined an AmeriCorps Program through Roca right after I dropped out. I got my GED through that program. Then through AmeriCorps I received an education award. I took that education award and went to school, to a vocational school to work, to become a PC support technician. I finished up that school but I was still kind of working for Roca at different, at a more administrative kind of capacity. Then I was brought in just to manage the software.
It went from managing software, data entry, to basic analysis and then it kind of snowballed from there. So at this point I've kind of stopped developing myself in the IT field, and I'm more focused around performance management. And I really love what I'm doing right now, and I'm finally—because, I want to increase my capacity to help the organization in my senior management role—I'm actually enrolling back in school in January. So I want to get a degree in business administration with a concentration in management.… I feel like I can just help the organization and move them further along in this, in performance management and evaluation.
